Initiatives
WWMC develops initiatives that advance music's recognition and protection at the international level — bringing together expert communities and engaging institutions around shared priorities for music.
The Statement on Global Musical Culture
Launched at WWMC 2024 at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, the Statement calls on the global community to recognise its responsibility towards music — and to act, before what cannot be restored is lost.
- Priority — the importance of musical culture for humanity.
- Musical heritage — challenges in its protection.
- Endangered cultures — the musical cultures of indigenous peoples as one of the most vulnerable and valuable parts of musical heritage.
- Access — to world musical heritage for all people.
- The status of music in society.
- Music education.
- Research — the importance and prospects of scientific research in music.
- Conditions for the prosperity of musical culture.
- The diversity of musical cultures.
- The equality of musical cultures.
The Justification is a companion document to the Statement — a body of expert testimony that provides the scientific, artistic, and societal arguments for each of its clauses.
Where the Statement defines the tasks, the Justification demonstrates why they matter. It will bring together contributions from leading researchers, musicians, and cultural figures across disciplines and traditions — building the evidentiary foundation for the Statement's recognition at the international level.
The Justification is currently in preparation.
